Who is Brian Cole? FBI reveals identity of suspect in Jan. 6 DC pipe bomb case

The FBI has arrested an individual believed to have planted pipe bombs near the offices of the Democratic and Republican national committees in Washington, D.C., just before the January 6, 2021 Capitol events. The suspect has been identified as Brian Jerome Cole Jr., 30, from Northern Virginia, according to Attorney General Pam Bondi.

Background on the Incident

The explosive devices were discovered on the night of January 5, 2021, but fortunately did not detonate. Federal authorities had been investigating the case for nearly five years before making the arrest.

Who is Brian Cole?

Cole resides in Woodbridge, Virginia, within Prince William County, roughly 20 miles south of Washington, D.C. He graduated from C.D. Hylton High School in 2013. Public records indicate that he has no prior criminal convictions, though he has multiple traffic violations that occurred after the placement of the pipe bombs.

Law enforcement has been unable to reach Cole or his relatives for comment, and it is currently unknown if he has legal representation.

Charges

Cole faces charges for the use of an explosive device. Attorney General Bondi noted that additional charges could be forthcoming, emphasizing that the case progressed through meticulous investigative work rather than new tips or witnesses.

Law Enforcement Activity

On December 4, 2025, Prince William County police and FBI agents sealed off the street outside Coles residence while conducting a search. Details on items seized have not yet been released.

This is an ongoing investigation, and further updates are expected as authorities continue their work.
