The Republican Party is set to retain control of Tennessee's 7th Congressional District, despite efforts by Democrats to capture the strongly conservative seat, according to projections from the Associated Press on Tuesday. Republican contender Matt Van Epps appears poised to defeat Democratic challenger Aftyn Behn.
This special election took place following the resignation of Republican Representative Mark Green and attracted national attention, being widely interpreted as a commentary on President Trump's influence. During the primaries, Trump endorsed Van Epps, participated in a phone rally supporting him the night before the vote, and offered his congratulations after the projected win.
The race has drawn widespread interest as a potential indicator of Republican strength in traditionally red districts.
