DC mayor candidate reveals Democratic socialist platform

Washington, D.C. Council member Janeese Lewis George (D), a democratic socialist, revealed on Monday her intention to run for Mayor, following Muriel Bowser's (D) announcement last week that she will not seek re-election. Lewis George, currently serving her second term representing the 4th Ward, stated in her campaign announcement that many residents continue to face financial pressure, from high housing costs to childcare challenges, and feel unsafe in their communities.

People experience unequal access to opportunities, and city government often seems unresponsive or prioritizes the needs of the influential over ordinary residents. That is unacceptable and not the city we deserve, which is why I am running for Mayor, she added. I will collaborate with anyone to enhance the lives of residents and confront anyone obstructing progress.

Lewis George is considered the first major candidate to enter the race for Bowsers successor. She has served on the city council since 2021 after defeating Brandon Todd, a close ally of Bowser. Prior to her council role, she worked as D.C.s assistant attorney general.

During her 2020 campaign against Todd, Lewis George faced criticism for prior comments in support of reallocating law enforcement funding, a topic that gained attention after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The issue resurfaced during her 2024 campaign and is expected to be a point of discussion in the 2026 election. She clarified her stance in an interview with The Washington Post before last years June primary, explaining that the goal was to prevent violence against Black residents while still respecting and supporting police officers.

Recently, several democratic socialists have won prominent mayoral elections, including Zohran Mamdani in New York City and Katie Wilson in Seattle.
