Pop icon Madonna has openly denounced Donald Trumps choice to ignore World AIDS Day, calling it both unthinkable and ridiculous. Through her Instagram account, she reflected on the days importance and voiced concern over the administrations stance.
In her post, Madonna highlighted the lasting impact of AIDS, emphasizing that December 1 has been recognized globally for decades as a day to remember those affected by the crisis. She wrote, Today is World AIDS Day. For four decades, this day has been observed internationally, as millions of lives have been affected by HIV.
Addressing Trumps decision, the singer criticized the directive, saying, Donald Trump has decided that World AIDS Day should no longer be acknowledged. Its one thing to instruct federal agents not to recognize this day, but to expect the public to act as if it never happened is absurd, ridiculous, and unthinkable.
Madonna also shared her personal connection to the epidemic, recalling the profound losses she has experienced. Without specifying names, she wrote, I doubt he has ever witnessed a close friend die from AIDS, held their hand, and watched them take their last breath at 23. She added that her list of those lost to the disease is quite long and suggested that many of her followers could relate to such experiences.
Concluding her message, Madonna urged her audience to continue honoring World AIDS Day. She stressed that a cure has yet to be found and that lives are still being claimed by the disease. I refuse to let these deaths be in vain. I will continue to honor World AIDS Day, and I hope you will join me in doing the same, she stated.
