FBI deputy director denies claims of FBI hiding pipe bomb suspect

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino addressed questions regarding his previous statements suggesting the FBI concealed the identity of the individual responsible for placing pipe bombs outside political party offices on January 5, 2021.

In a December 4 interview, following the apprehension and identification of the alleged bomber, Fox News host Sean Hannity reminded Bongino of his earlier podcast and social media remarks. Bongino responded that the FBI was confident we have the right person.

Reflecting on his transition from media commentator to FBI official, Bongino stated, I was paid in the past for my opinions. Thats clear. One day I may return to that space, but currently, I am paid to serve as deputy director, and our investigations are based on facts.

The Justice Department announced on December 4 that Brian Jerome Cole Jr., 30, from Northern Virginia, had been arrested in connection with the pipe bombs.

Before assuming the role of deputy director, Bongino had suggested on a January 2024 podcast episode that the FBI already knew the suspects identity but had not disclosed it, hinting at a possible inside job. The pipe bombs, placed near the Democratic and Republican National Committee offices on January 5, 2021, were functional but did not detonate.

Bongino and FBI Director Kash Patel, both former far-right media figures, had previously expressed skepticism about the investigation, particularly regarding the device found at the Democratic National Committee office where then-vice president-elect Kamala Harris was present. Bongino remarked in January 2024, I have zero doubt it was a setup. Was it government? I don't know. I'm not going to speculate on who did it. Someone who opposed Donald Trump planted those bombs.

During a September Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Patel emphasized that comments made by himself and Bongino occurred while they were private citizens.

Bongino highlighted the importance of separating personal opinions from official responsibilities, stating, What we have the ability to do is set aside our personal beliefs to deliver the mission of justice for this country, and we're doing it day in and day out.
