FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino offered an unusual explanation Thursday regarding his previous promotion of conspiracy theories about pipe bombs found at Democratic and Republican party offices five years ago.

After authorities arrested a suspect in the attempted bombings earlier that day, Fox News host Sean Hannity asked Bongino about his prior assertions claiming a massive cover-up by the government and suggesting the incidents were potentially an inside job.

Look, Sean, in the past I was compensated for sharing my viewpoints. Thats a fact, Bongino admitted. Now, my role is different. Im serving as deputy director, and our investigations are strictly fact-based.

Despite this clarification, Bongino continued discussing theories surrounding alleged collusion, indicating that his previous commentary hasnt been completely left behind. Hannity referenced Bonginos posts on X, made both shortly after the January 6, 2021 riot and as recently as January of this year, just a month before he was appointed to a leadership position at the FBI.

Bongino suggested that the agency may have already identified a suspect but is withholding the information, implying the possibility of an internal operation.
