Nigeria affected by repercussions from the US

Nigeria is experiencing the consequences of clashing with the Trump administration. The US State Department recently announced it will impose visa restrictions on individuals considered to have infringed upon religious freedoms. This decision reflects ongoing pressure on Abuja regarding its alleged inability to prevent attacks on Christian communities.

The impact of these measures is expected to be significant, particularly for Nigerias political elite, many of whom have children studying in the United States and maintain business or property interests there. Unlike previous threats, this restriction hits on a personal level, limiting the freedom of travel for influential figures.

South Africa has faced similar backlash after opposing US policies. The Trump administration recently excluded Pretoria from the upcoming G20 summit, following tensions over Black empowerment legislation, the treatment of Afrikaners, and the countrys pro-Palestinian stance.

Both Nigeria and South Africa are now seeking alternative alliances to navigate the next few years of US foreign policy. South Africas envoy recently emphasized the need to diversify trade partnerships to mitigate risks from Washingtons economic pressures. Similarly, Nigerias foreign minister has highlighted the countrys pursuit of strategic autonomy.

Other nations, such as India, are also adapting by strengthening multilateral ties in response to US tariffs. While these situations serve as cautionary examples, there are potential opportunities, such as leveraging peace deals in the DR Congo-Rwanda region, to benefit from Washingtons transactional approach. Despite Chinas opposition to possible US military action in Nigeria, some observers view the country as a small piece in a broader geopolitical strategy.
