Nigerias defense minister has resigned following a surge in violent attacks that led the nations president to impose a state of emergency last week. The country, Africas most populous, has faced persistent challenges in maintaining security, particularly in the northern regions where Islamist militant activity has intensified.
Recent incidents include the kidnapping of hundreds of schoolchildren last month, many of whom are still held captive. According to the nations main newspaper, nearly 500 individuals have been abducted over the past two weeks alone.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has warned of possible military intervention if Nigeria does not curb the attacks targeting Christian communities, adding an international dimension to the ongoing security crisis.
