Noem advocates for 'complete travel ban' on countries 'overwhelming' US with immigrants following DC attack

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem declared on Monday that after a discussion with President Donald Trump, she is advocating for a comprehensive travel restriction targeting nations she claims are sending high-risk immigrants to the United States. Noem shared the announcement on X, sharply criticizing certain immigrants and labeling them as threats.

"I just met with the President. I am recommending a full travel restriction on all countries that have been sending individuals who pose serious risks to our nation," Noem stated.

She argued that some immigrants endanger public safety and strain resources intended for U.S. citizens. The announcement followed reports of an Afghan immigrant allegedly attacking two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., near the White House.

The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, legally entered the United States in 2021 through the Biden administrations Operation Allies Welcome program, which resettled Afghan refugees after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan. Noem criticized the vetting process, claiming that Lakanwal and others were not adequately screened, and held the previous administration accountable for what she described as insufficient oversight.

"Our nation was built on the efforts and sacrifices of our forefathers, not for foreign actors to endanger our citizens or consume resources meant for Americans," she added.
