House Republicans are expressing private frustration with Speaker Mike Johnson over his perceived inability to address key issues like the cost-of-living surge and soaring healthcare premiums, according to CNN. Lawmakers are increasingly anxious about voters economic worries, President Donald Trumps declining approval ratings, and Democrats recent victories in critical statewide elections. Tensions are further fueled by attempts to restrict the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files and Trumps contentious nationwide redistricting efforts.
Concerns intensified after the Republican candidate in a special election in Tennessee barely edged out a progressive opponent, securing a narrow single-digit victory. This outcome has amplified worries about Johnsons readiness to approve Trumps agenda without considering voter sentiment.
Privately, a GOP representative warned Johnson, 53, that his leadership was "slipping away" and that frustration within the caucus was "boiling over," CNN reported. Morale has never been lower, the lawmaker stated.
After returning from Thanksgiving break, House members expected to vote on legislation addressing economic concerns, but were instead informed that the weeks focus would be on regulating college athletics. Republicans have yet to outline a clear strategy for lowering healthcare costs, following the GOP spending bill that cut nearly $1 trillion in Medicaid funding and failed to extend Affordable Care Act subsidies. As a result, premiums for roughly 22 million Americans are expected to rise sharply next year, with the average premium potentially doubling.
Although Johnson claims to be developing a plan, some lawmakers remain frustrated by the lack of visible progress. GOP Representative Carlos Gimenez expressed confidence in the speaker, while Johnson pledged to present a plan next week. Still, many party members are uncertain about its details.
There is concern that legislative deadlines may make it difficult to enact meaningful changes this year. Without an extension of enhanced ACA subsidieswhich seems unlikelymillions of Americans could face unaffordable healthcare costs. Johnson acknowledged the complexity of the issue, stating, Were trying to get consensus on it. Its a complicated matter. Lots of opinions on it.
Rep. Thomas Massie criticized Johnson for acting as a "rubber stamp" for Trump, suggesting that many Republican lawmakers are considering retirement or running for statewide offices out of frustration. Intelligent, hard-working people come to Congress only to find they must approve whatever Donald Trump wants. Thats humiliating, Massie said. This is why so many are seeking other offices or retiringyou could get a monkey to do this job.
