President Trump has replaced the lead architect overseeing the construction of a new ballroom on the White House grounds, according to a government source on Thursday. Originally, James McCrery II and his firm were chosen to manage the $300 million initiative, which has faced criticism due to the demolition of the East Wing.
With the project advancing and expanding in scope, the administration confirmed that Shalom Baranes, a veteran designer of government buildings, will now lead the effort.
As we move into the next phase of developing the White House Ballroom, we are pleased to announce that Shalom Baranes has joined our team to bring President Trumps vision to life. This ballroom is poised to be one of the most significant additions to the White House since the Oval Office, said White House spokesperson David Ingle. Shaloms extensive experience in shaping the architectural landscape of Washington, D.C., makes him an invaluable asset for completing this project.
A White House official noted that McCrery will continue to contribute as a consultant. Earlier reports indicated that Trump and McCrery had differences regarding the presidents desire for a larger ballroom than initially planned.
Initially unveiled in late July, the White House had announced plans for a $200 million ballroom next to the East Wing, designed to host around 1,000 guests and accommodate events such as state dinners. Trump had long aimed to add a similar space to the residence. However, the project has been controversial, especially after demolition of the East Wing began in October, contrary to earlier statements that the ballroom would not impact the existing structure.
The estimated cost of the ballroom has risen to $300 million, though Trump and his team have emphasized that the funding will come from donors.
Analysis: White House Ballroom Leadership Change
The replacement of James McCrery II with Shalom Baranes as the lead architect of the White House ballroom signals a shift in project management priorities. Baranes brings extensive experience in government building design, which the administration highlights as crucial for meeting the expanded scope of the $300 million initiative.
Differences between Trump and McCrery over the ballroom’s size appear to have influenced this change. McCrery will remain involved as a consultant, suggesting continuity in design input while accommodating the president’s revised vision.
The project’s cost increase from $200 million to $300 million, along with the East Wing demolition, underscores the complexity and controversy surrounding this addition. The administration insists that donor funding will cover the expenses, aiming to address public concern over the use of federal resources.
Overall, this leadership transition reflects a strategic move to ensure the ballroom’s completion according to the expanded plans, while retaining some institutional knowledge from the original architect.
