Gavin Newsom's Response to Trump Renaming Federal Building Goes Viral for Hilarious Reasons

On Monday, the U.S. State Department revealed that former President Trumps name has been added to the United States Institute of Peace building.

Earlier this year, Trumps administration significantly downsized the Institute, leading many to view the renaming as ironic. Peter Baker, Chief White House Correspondent for The New York Times, noted, Trump's White House dismantled the Institute of Peace, dismissed its staff, and described it as 'bloated and useless.' Now, he has attached his name to the very institution he sought to dismantle.

In May, a federal judge criticized Trumps approach, describing it as a forcible takeover of the Institute. The USIPs legal representative commented, Renaming the building adds insult to injury. The takeover was deemed unlawful by a federal court, though the ruling is currently paused due to appeals. Eventually, the rightful administrators will regain control and restore the Institute to its intended purpose.

Social media reactions were immediate. Users called the move either propaganda or narcissistic. One user wrote, When a former presidents name goes on a building, its an honor. When a sitting president does it, its vanity. Another joked, Needs more gold.

California Governor Gavin Newsom also shared his thoughts, posting, Hard at work, I see, alongside an image of the renamed building, highlighting the humor many found in the situation.

The renaming has sparked widespread online commentary, memes, and jokes, as people compare it to absurd scenarios, emphasizing the unusual nature of a president branding a federal institution with their own name.
