Trump grants pardon to Democratic lawmaker accused in federal bribery case

Former President Donald Trump has issued a pardon for Representative Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, along with his wife, who were both implicated in a federal bribery and conspiracy investigation. Trump criticized the current administration, asserting that the Justice Department has been misused for political purposes.

In a social media post, Trump labeled the case against Cuellar and his spouse as a prominent example of alleged political targeting. Federal prosecutors had accused the couple of accepting significant sums of money in return for promoting the interests of an energy company controlled by Azerbaijan and a Mexican bank. Additionally, Cuellar was alleged to have agreed to influence U.S. legislation favorably toward Azerbaijan and deliver a supportive speech on the House floor.

The trial had been set to commence in April, with Cuellar maintaining his and his wife's innocence throughout the proceedings.

Trump added in his post: "Henry, I don't know you, but you can rest easy tonight - your ordeal is officially over!"

This is an ongoing situation, and further details will be provided as they emerge.
