Trump increases the stakes before the Tennessee special election: 'The world is paying attention'

President Trump participated in a rally via phone for Tennessee Republican House candidate Matt Van Epps, just one day ahead of Tuesdays special election in the 7th Congressional District. Trump encouraged supporters to aim for a sweeping victory.

Speaking over speakerphone while Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) held the device to the microphone, Trump said, The world is watching Tennessee and this district. The Republican Party must demonstrate its strength. Our party is larger and stronger than ever, and we love Tennessee.

Van Epps, formerly commissioner of the Tennessee Department of General Services, faces Democratic state Representative Aftyn Behn in the special election. The seat became vacant after former Representative Mark Green (R) resigned earlier this year. Although the district leans heavily Republican, Democrats hope to exceed expectations following recent off-year election successes.

Abhi Rahman, deputy communications director at the Democratic National Committee, commented, Republicans are investing millions and using all resources to hold a seat Trump won by 22 points. While Van Epps supports all of Trumps policies, even if costs rise for Tennessee families, Behn focuses on reducing grocery, housing, and healthcare expenses.

Trump praised Van Epps as one of the best and very special, while criticizing Behn. Shes spoken against Christianity, country music, supports unrestricted transgender policies, and open borders. How can anyone elect her? he said. The remarks referenced Behns 2020 podcast comments expressing frustration with Nashville, bachelorette parties, pedal taverns, and country music. Behn responded last month in a video, clarifying that she wants Nashville to improve and be supportive of working people, though she occasionally gets frustrated with the citys entertainment scene.
