The New York Yankees recently lost Devin Williams to the Mets and may also see Luke Weaver leave through free agency, highlighting an urgent need to strengthen their bullpen. But would the team really offer a major package for a reliever?
Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report suggests the Yankees could send top pitching prospect Carlos Lagrange, first baseman T.J. Rumfield, and pitcher Harrison Cohen to the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for Trevor Megill. This is the same Megill who previously criticized New York's use of torpedo bats after the Yankees swept the Brewers at the start of the 2025 season.
"The Yankees clearly need to enhance their relief staff and have a precedent of trades with the Brewers, including acquiring Devin Williams last winter," Reuter explained. "Offering Milwaukee a choice among Carlos Lagrange, Bryce Cunningham, or Elmer Rodriguez as the main prospect, along with near-MLB-ready prospects T.J. Rumfield and Harrison Cohen, would be a strong return for Megill, who has two years of control remaining."
Megill is undoubtedly a reliable pitcher. In 2025, he posted a 2.49 ERA, allowed 36 hits, and struck out 60 batters over 47 innings, recording 30 saves. The year before, he finished with a 2.72 ERA and 21 saves. However, he isnt considered elite enough to justify trading a top prospect like Lagrange.
The Yankees would likely be better served reserving their prospects for a bigger acquisition, such as a starting pitcher or an All-Star hitter, rather than a bullpen arm who has only recently become effective after struggling during his first three major league seasons.
Historically, Yankees GM Brian Cashman has excelled at building strong bullpens without overspending. While acquiring Williams last winter was slightly uncharacteristic, Cashman has repeatedly executed smart deals for relievers, including Fernando Cruz from the Reds for Jose Trevino and picking up Weaver in 2023.
Given Megills age of 32 and a lifetime ERA of 3.98, there is little reason for the Yankees to part with top prospects for him.
