Four people die in shooting at child's birthday party in California

At least four individuals have lost their lives in a mass shooting that erupted during a child's birthday party in Stockton, California. An additional ten people sustained injuries during the attack at a local restaurant on Saturday evening.

Authorities confirmed that the victims include both adults and children, though the current condition of those injured remains unverified. Law enforcement officials stated that the suspect is still at large, and preliminary findings suggest the attack may have been deliberate.

The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office reported the shooting occurred shortly before 6:00 PM local time (02:00 GMT Sunday) and is urging anyone with relevant information, videos, or eyewitness accounts to come forward.

Sheriffs spokeswoman Heather Brent described the situation as "incomprehensible," emphasizing that the investigation is ongoing and many details remain unclear. Brent noted, "Initial reports indicate this could have been a targeted attack, and investigators are exploring all angles."

Stockton Mayor Christina Fugazi labeled the tragedy as "unacceptable," stating, "Families should be celebrating together, not standing in hospital rooms, hoping their loved ones survive."

California enforces some of the strictest gun laws in the United States, though the state has faced legal challenges in recent years. In 2021, a federal judge struck down California's ban on assault weapons, such as AR-15 rifles. The following year, the U.S. Supreme Court expanded gun rights, overturning a New York law limiting firearm possession and casting uncertainty on similar regulations in California.
