James Solomon defeats Jim McGreevey in Jersey City mayoral race, preventing political comeback, CNN projects

James Solomon, a member of the city council, is set to assume the role of mayor of Jersey City following his victory in Tuesdays runoff election, according to projections from CNNs Decision Desk. Solomons win prevents former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey from returning to public office after nearly 20 years. McGreevey stepped down in 2004 during his first term amid revelations of an extramarital affair and his sexual orientation, along with allegations of misusing his official position in a relationship with an aide.

Solomon, considered the younger and more progressive contender, and McGreevey had previously been the leading candidates in the November general election. However, neither achieved the necessary majority to bypass a runoff. With this election, Solomon will become the first new mayor of Jersey City since 2013, following Steve Fulop, who opted not to seek another term as mayor to run for governor. Fulop was ultimately defeated in the Democratic primary by Mikie Sherrill, the governor-elect.
