Kilrea Bridge set to reopen following 11-week closure

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) has confirmed that Kilrea Bridge in County Londonderry, closed for over 11 weeks, will reopen on Saturday morning.

The closure, which began on 20 September, followed the discovery of significant cracks in a retaining wall. Reopening is scheduled for 08:00 GMT, but the bridge will only accommodate cars and light vehicles weighing up to three tonnes while permanent repairs continue.

A DfI spokesperson stated that temporary stabilization efforts are "well advanced" and called the reopening "a vital step" in easing community disruption. Traffic across the bridge will be regulated by a 2.5m (7.5ft) width limit at both ends to maintain safety during ongoing works. Drivers are urged to follow these restrictions carefully.

Kilrea Bridge, connecting the western bank of the River Bann to County Antrim, is a single-lane structure originally built in 1783 and is listed for its historical significance. The permanent repair project is expected to conclude by mid-February 2026. The bridge has been closed for maintenance in the past.

Local businesses have reported that the extended closure has affected sales, and the DfI thanked the community and businesses for their patience and cooperation throughout the repair period.
