Concerns rise over increased traffic in tourist town suffering from deterioration

Residents of Burford, a picturesque town in Oxfordshire often called the "Gateway to the Cotswolds," have raised concerns that relentless traffic is damaging historic structures, polluting the area, and obstructing driveways.

Local resident Ken Gray reported that hundreds of lorries and thousands of cars traverse the town every day. Campaigner Paul Newman from Save Burford warned that vibrations from the heavy vehicles are causing structural decay in the town's historic buildings. He also highlighted that a proposal to construct 70 new homes in Burford could worsen the traffic situation.

The A361 road runs directly through the town center, and Newman described the scene: "Large 30-40 tonne trucks move down a medieval street. Each passage gradually deteriorates the buildings. You can see the damage on window ledges in pubs and restaurants, with mortar crumbling."

Newman expressed concern over a draft plan by West Oxfordshire District Council for a new housing development on Sheep Street, noting that it could increase congestion further.

Gray, who lives near Burford's narrow medieval bridge over the River Windrush, estimated that 400-600 lorries and around 12,000 cars cross the bridge daily, often creating traffic jams that make accessing his own driveway difficult. "Traffic queues can stretch over a kilometre onto the A40. The noise is constant," he said.

An 18-month trial ban on heavier lorries using the A361 through Burford ended in February 2022 and was not extended. Oxfordshire County Council previously admitted that its goal to cut lorry traffic by 50% had not been achieved.

In response, the council stated: "We recognize that this has been a persistent problem for residents. We are continually looking for ways to address traffic concerns." Plans include a new zebra crossing and a partnership with local organizations for a comprehensive lorry study.

West Oxfordshire District Council is inviting residents to comment on the proposed housing site until 22 December. The council emphasized its support for the lorry ban and ongoing discussions with the county about possible future solutions.

Burford Town Council is exploring strategies for coach and car parking improvements to relieve congestion and preserve the town's historic charm.
