Newest information: Fire at Downtown Raleigh Convention Center. What we have learned

Authorities reported that a fire at the downtown Raleigh Convention Center Monday evening has been brought under control, following a significant release of black smoke into the sky. The incident, first reported at 9:29 p.m., was identified as a natural gas-related event originating from the buildings roof, according to Raleigh Public Information Officer Julia Milstead. The blaze was extinguished by 10 p.m., and no injuries occurred.

At the time of the fire, 17 individuals were inside the center, all of whom evacuated safely. Milstead noted that the origin of the fire is still under investigation, though it started near a mechanical platform. Authorities later shut off the gas supply as a precaution.

The Raleigh Convention Center, located between South McDowell and South Salisbury streets, hosts a variety of professional conventions and public events, such as GalaxyCon Raleigh and the Downtown Raleigh Home Show. No events were taking place during Mondays fire.

Witnesses reported seeing flames rise above the roof briefly, while smoke continued to billow even after the fire was largely controlled. Cate Kimball, who works nearby, stated, We just saw smoke coming off the roof. It didnt go any lower than that. The scent of burnt plastic was noticeable several blocks away.

About 50 firefighters responded to the emergency, and by 10:30 p.m., the situation was largely contained. A ladder truck extended above the roofline as onlookers gathered on sidewalks around nearby businesses.

Completed in 2008, the convention center spans 500,000 square feet across three levels and was one of Raleighs most expensive construction projects, costing over $200 million. A prominent feature is the Shimmer Wall, a large mural of a tree by Thomas Sayre that changes colors when illuminated by nearby lights. During the fire, the walls vibrant lighting caused some to initially confuse it with flames.

The center has multiple events planned in the coming days, including the North Carolina Cybersecurity Summit, a holiday party, and cheerleading competitions, as well as a trade show for the Association Executives of North Carolina the following weekend. The city is currently investing $387.5 million in expanding the facility, adding more event space and meeting rooms, and relocating the Red Hat Amphitheater.

Fire crews worked on the roof and throughout the building to ensure full containment. This remains a developing story, and further updates will follow.
