Activists have been occupying a 1950s bus shelter to prevent its demolition. Norfolk County Council stated that the structure on Station Approach in Sheringham "fails to meet modern accessibility requirements and is considered unsafe," having conducted a public consultation on the proposed changes earlier this year.
The bus shelter is adorned with a mural depicting a steam train moving through poppy fields, honoring Sheringham's railway heritage. Steffan Aquarone, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, expressed his support for the preservation effort, emphasizing: "Norfolk County Council must engage in meaningful dialogue with the community before finalizing any plans, let alone allowing construction crews to begin work."
A spokesperson for North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) explained that the council has "very limited authority over this project, as Norfolk County Council oversees highways and does not require our consent under permitted development regulations."
Campaigner Paula Bastow, 56, arrived at the shelter at 19:30 GMT on Monday and spent the night there, describing it as the "heart of Sheringham, a gathering place where people meet and wait for buses." Rob Emery, 55, stayed until 00:30 and returned before 05:00 on Tuesday, noting: "Many locals feel passionately about preserving this bus shelter. Only a few of these structures remain nationwide, and it feels like the council is intent on removing it. We had to act immediately to prevent its destruction."
Barriers have been erected around the shelter while the demolition plans remain in place. Norfolk County Council stated that the project is "already underway" and has the backing of bus operators, the North Norfolk Railway, Sheringham Town Council, and North Norfolk District Council.
Mr. Aquarone added: "It is shocking that the situation has escalated to this point, highlighting strong local attachment to the shelter and a sense of being unheard. There is still an opportunity to find a solution that satisfies everyone involved."
