Cadets depart from base designated for male asylum seekers

Two cadet units have recently held their concluding parades at a military training camp slated by the government to accommodate male asylum seekers. Plans to host up to 540 individuals at the Crowborough site in East Sussex have faced multiple public protests and are currently postponed.

The Army Cadets marked their final parade on Wednesday before vacating the base, followed by the Air Cadets on Thursday. The Ministry of Defence emphasized its commitment to "the safety and wellbeing of all cadets" and is exploring options to ensure their programs can continue uninterrupted.

Rachel Millward, deputy leader of Wealden District Council and deputy national leader of the Green Party, told BBC Radio Sussex that the cadet programs are "an essential part of the local community, vital for young people and their families." She criticized the government for initially handling the situation with a "casual attitude," failing to properly listen, communicate, and plan.

Temporary Measures and Home Office Plans

The Home Office released detailed explanations regarding its temporary use of the site. A spokesperson noted that relocating people to large military sites is part of broader reforms addressing illegal migration and factors that attract migrants to the UK.

The plans for Crowborough and Cameron Barracks will proceed only when the sites are fully prepared and safe. Authorities stressed that past mistakes involving rushed relocations causing unsafe and chaotic outcomes for local communities would not be repeated.

An MoD representative confirmed that no final decisions have been made concerning cadet activities at the site. Options are being evaluated to allow cadet operations to continue with minimal disruption. The MoD will work closely with the Home Office to assess potential impacts and implement any necessary mitigation strategies.
