Residents gathered in large numbers to discuss measures addressing the impact of using a local hotel for emergency housing for homeless individuals. Many locals expressed that the Breckland Councils decision to utilize the privately-owned NR19 hotel in Dereham, Norfolk, has coincided with a rise in criminal activity.
The council confirmed it has no plans to close the hotel, a decision that drew loud disapproval from the approximately 250 attendees at Wednesdays meeting, which included representatives from the police.
"Officials have committed to clearer communication and tangible action; now we expect them to heed the community taskforces recommendations to restore safety in our town centre," said resident and meeting organizer Ian Milligan.
The Grade II listed property, formerly known as the Hill House Hotel, has provided emergency accommodation for over ten years, but concerns appear to have intensified, according to local reporting.
During the meeting, several women shared that they had left their workplace "collectively" due to fears for their personal safety. Other residents reported that individuals staying at the hotel frequently congregate outside, engaging in drinking, drug use, and intimidating behaviour toward passers-by.
Council officials explained that the hotel is used specifically for single men, including former offenders, and is not intended for families or survivors of sexual abuse. They noted that while some other councils continue similar practices, three local authorities in Norfolk and Suffolk agreed to stop using NR19 for housing individuals at the councils request.
Breckland has established a taskforce to coordinate district agencies and address behavioural challenges linked to the hotel.
Police Area Commander, Insp. Simon Jones, informed attendees that officers logged 115 hours of patrols in the town last month, with crime decreasing by 8% since April 2024.
