On Wednesday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul announced that Berlin will contribute an extra $200 million to facilitate the delivery of US-made weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. This commitment slightly exceeds the 150 million ($174.6 million) previously promised by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius.
The funds will be allocated through the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program, which enables ammunition and weapons produced in the United States to be sold to European allies and Canada, who then provide them to Ukraine. Germany has already supported Ukraine with a $500 million weapons package under this scheme.
Wadephul also stated that an additional 25 million will be directed to a NATO trust fund for winter equipment and medical supplies for Ukraine.
The announcement comes as NATO foreign ministers convene in Brussels to evaluate further assistance to Ukraine amid ongoing US-led diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict with Russia.
Ahead of the meeting, Wadephul remarked that Russian President Vladimir Putin "has not yet shown any genuine intention to negotiate." He added, "Putin aims to continue destabilizing European and Euro-Atlantic security, test our defense readiness, and create divisions within our alliance. But he will not succeed."
