Police officers honored for bravery during riot

Two officers from Staffordshire Police have been recognized for demonstrating exceptional bravery during the violent disturbances that erupted in the summer of 2024. PCs Bethany Cottrell and Natalie Millward were directly involved in managing a riot in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, on August 3.

The officers courageously confronted and disarmed rioters despite lacking protective gear, as they were initially assigned as liaison officers. They were later instructed to step back for their safety but voluntarily assumed alternative duties to continue assisting their colleagues.

For their heroic efforts, both PCs were awarded the Uniformed Hero category at the Staffordshire Your Heroes Awards, presented in Stoke-on-Trent on November 27. The unrest in August 2024 was triggered across the UK by misinformation following the tragic murder of three girls in Southport. In Hanley, officers encountered individuals armed with gardening forks, baseball bats, and timber.

Ch Insp Dave Barrow praised the officers, saying their courage and selflessness helped reduce violence and prevent serious injuries. "In the face of extreme danger, they prioritized the safety of others over their own," he stated.

The Your Heroes Awards, organised by Staffordshire University, celebrate unsung heroes in local communities. The Uniformed Hero category specifically honors individuals who exceed the expectations of their official duties, exemplifying dedication and bravery.
