An international movement advocating for the release of Marwan Barghouti, a prominent Palestinian figure imprisoned in Israel since 2002, is gaining momentum. Over 200 influential personalities, including Margaret Atwood and Javier Bardem, have publicly voiced their support.
In an open letter released Wednesday, supporters expressed deep concern over Marwan Barghoutis ongoing detention, the harsh treatment he faces, and the denial of his legal rights while in prison. The letter urges the United Nations and national governments to intervene.
Many of the signatories have previously been involved in efforts to end Israels military operations in Gaza. The current letter forms part of a global Free Marwan campaign initiated by Barghoutis family earlier this week.
Barghouti, a senior Fatah leader under President Mahmoud Abbas, is often compared to Nelson Mandela in Palestine. He is serving five life sentences in Israel for alleged involvement in attacks during the Second Intifada (20002005). He has endured repeated physical assaults in prison, causing significant injuries.
Earlier this year, a video showed Barghouti being taunted in his cell at Ganot Prison in central Israel by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, marking one of the first public appearances of Barghouti in years. Family members reported his shocking condition, citing exhaustion and hunger. In September, during a prison transfer, he was reportedly beaten by Israeli guards, sustaining four broken ribs and head injuries. Concerned for his life, his family launched the international campaign with events held in countries including the United Kingdom and France.
Barghouti is viewed as a central figure for Palestinian unity and a potential key player in any future Palestinian state. Many see him as a symbol of hope for a free Palestine. Recent polling by the Peoples Company for Polls and Survey Research (PCPSR) indicated that, if elections were held, Barghouti would decisively win, with Hamas second and President Abbas third.
The Palestinian Authority under Abbas has faced criticism for its handling of the West Bank, currently experiencing Israeli military operations and settler violence. Abbas is advocating for the PA to play a role in post-war governance in Gaza under a UN-backed plan by the United States and has promised legislative and presidential elections within a year of the conflicts end, though public skepticism remains high, with 60 percent doubting elections will take place.
