India Hicks, 58, who was a bridesmaid at Prince Charless 1981 wedding to Lady Diana Spencer, has shared that she has been diagnosed with skin cancer. Hicks is also a goddaughter of King Charles and the daughter of Lady Pamela Hicks, who once served as a lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth.
On her Substack, Hicks described the cancer as fast-moving and recounted her initial reaction: I reacted the way most people do: a strange mixture of calm practicality and a little private terror. She underwent surgery in Miami, Florida, and fortunately received confirmation that she was clear of cancer shortly before Thanksgiving.
Life, with its own mysterious choreography, shifted the plan, Hicks wrote, adding that such news can make the world feel slightly blurred at the edges. She described the experience as a mix of routine daily activities while quietly worrying, saying, You tell yourself youre fine, you make tea, you answer emails, all while a small internal voice is whispering, What if its worse than we think? Hicks, a mother of five, acknowledged her gratitude, saying, This time, I was lucky.
Hicks also reflected on her connection to the royal family. Her mother, Lady Pamela Hicks, attended Queen Elizabeths funeral in 2022, which India called a privilege on Instagram. She praised the Queen as a rare constant in a world of exceptional change, noting her remarkable tenure as the nations figurehead through decades of historical events.
Recalling her experience as a 13-year-old bridesmaid to Diana, Hicks told Insider she felt proud and delighted but also a little alarmed at being asked to wear a frilly dress. She described the 1980s wedding fashion as voluptuous and over the top, and drama everywhere.
