Israel will be able to take part in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest following a decision by organizers not to hold a vote on disqualifying the country. The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which broadcasts the contest in 56 countries, confirmed that a large majority of Members agreed there was no need for an additional vote, and Eurovision 2026 will proceed as planned with new safeguards in place.

The meeting took place on Thursday in Geneva, Switzerland, to address concerns from members threatening to boycott the event if Israel, involved in the ongoing conflict with Gaza since 2023, were allowed to compete. EBU members ultimately supported updates to the contest rules to strengthen trust, transparency, and neutrality, aiming to limit government or third-party influence on voting outcomes. Allegations had been made that Israel had attempted to sway support for its 2025 contestant, Yuval Raphael.

Despite the ruling, some nations announced they would boycott the competition due to the conflict. Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia will not participate now that Israel is confirmed to compete. Irelands broadcaster RT stated that participating would be unconscionable given the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the ongoing threat to civilian lives.

Israels President, Isaac Herzog, expressed gratitude to the EBU for permitting the country to compete, describing the decision as a gesture of solidarity, brotherhood, and cooperation, symbolizing a victory over those who aim to silence Israel and spread hatred.

Several countries, including Iceland and Belgium, have not yet announced their participation plans. Germany has publicly expressed support for Israels inclusion. The Eurovision Song Contest, which began in 1956, attracted roughly 166 million viewers last year. The 2026 event is scheduled for May in Vienna, Austria.

Commentary: Israel's Participation in Eurovision 2026

The European Broadcasting Union’s decision to allow Israel to participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest reflects a commitment to maintaining the contest’s schedule while reinforcing rules for neutrality and transparency. By avoiding a formal vote on disqualification, the EBU signaled that existing safeguards were sufficient to address concerns about government or third-party influence on voting outcomes.

However, the ruling has prompted several nations, including Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia, to announce boycotts. Their broadcasters cited ongoing humanitarian concerns in Gaza, demonstrating how geopolitical tensions continue to intersect with international cultural events.

Israel’s leadership welcomed the decision, framing it as a demonstration of solidarity and resistance to efforts aimed at isolating the country. Meanwhile, other member states, such as Germany, have expressed support for Israel’s inclusion, leaving participation from countries like Iceland and Belgium still undecided.

The 2026 contest, set for May in Vienna, Austria, will thus proceed with a complex mix of participants, boycotts, and enhanced procedural safeguards. This situation underscores the delicate balance the EBU must maintain between cultural celebration and political sensitivity in a highly visible international event.
