Hundreds of handcrafted festive stockings now line the seafront, drawing attention to the urgent need for foster carers. A total of 471 stockings have been carefully arranged along Weymouth Esplanade, with each one symbolizing a child or young person currently in foster care in Dorset.
The initiative is part of Dorset Council's Give the Greatest Gift campaign, aiming to raise public awareness and inspire more individuals to consider fostering. The colorful display is located near the Jubilee Clock and showcases stockings made by foster carers, children in care, community groups, and local residents.
Councillor Clare Sutton, responsible for children's services, education, and skills at Dorset Council, remarked on the community's enthusiastic participation: "The response has been incredible. Every stocking tells a story of care and compassion. Together, they deliver a powerful message: every child deserves to feel safe and supported, not only during the festive season but throughout the year."
The council hopes this striking exhibition will ignite conversations and encourage more people to explore fostering as a rewarding way to support vulnerable children in the community.
