People climbing Christmas display cause damage

Authorities are considering extra measures to protect a Christmas lights installation after it was damaged by people climbing on it. The incident occurred on the Bay of Lights Illumination Trail along Torquay's harbourside in Devon.

Footage shared online showed two women climbing the spiral metal frames of a Christmas tree early Sunday morning. Torbay Council described their actions as "dangerous, costly to repair, and disruptive to the enjoyment of others." The frame of the tree sustained damage, and several lights needed replacement, prompting officials to look into additional barriers and increased security.

The video captured one woman climbing over the low fence surrounding the tree and ascending roughly 6 meters (20 feet) to the top, where she waved a decorative star to her friends, who recorded the moment on a mobile phone. Another woman then joined her atop the tree.

Torbay Council emphasized that the 1.5-mile trail is designed for visitors to enjoy the light displays without climbing or touching them. "Creating this event requires significant time, effort, and resources," the council stated. "Please respect the installations and report any damage or vandalism to the authorities."

The trail, which runs between Torre Abbey and the harbour, includes various illuminated features such as a decorated Christmas tree. Similar incidents occurred last year when lights were broken, described by councillor David Thomas as "mindless behaviour."
