Putin visits New Delhi to strengthen Russia-India relations

NEW DELHI Russian President Vladimir Putin touched down in India on Thursday for a state visit aimed at enhancing diplomatic and economic connections between Moscow and New Delhi. At the airport, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Putin warmly, exchanging a close embrace and a firm handshake, reflecting their long-standing rapport.

Later in the evening, Modi will host a private dinner for Putin at his officially adorned residence. On Friday, the leaders are scheduled to engage in discussions during the 23rd India-Russia Summit, focusing on expanding cooperation in areas such as defense, energy, and skilled labor mobility.

The visit occurs amid heightened global tensions, with the United States intensifying efforts to broker a peace resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Putins trip will highlight New Delhis delicate diplomatic balancing act between Moscow and Washington, as the conflict in Ukraine approaches its fourth year.

This marks Putins first visit to India since 2021. Modi visited Moscow last year, and the two leaders also briefly met in China last September during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
