Putin's arrival in New Delhi strengthens Russia-India ties

NEW DELHI Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in India on Thursday for a state visit focused on enhancing bilateral and economic partnerships between Moscow and New Delhi. At the airport, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Putin warmly, exchanging a hearty hug and a firm handshake that reflected a close rapport.

Later this evening, Modi will host Putin for an exclusive dinner at his officially adorned residence. The two leaders are scheduled to hold discussions on Friday during the 23rd India-Russia Summit. Their talks will concentrate on expanding cooperation in key areas including defense, energy, and the mobility of skilled workers.

Putins trip comes amid heightened global attention on diplomatic efforts to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with the United States pushing for a peace initiative. The visit will also highlight Indias ongoing attempt to maintain a balanced relationship with both Moscow and Washington during the ongoing conflict.

This marks Putins first visit to India since 2021. Modi visited Moscow last year, and the two leaders met briefly in September in China during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
