Early Wednesday, a senior Russian official announced that Moscow has dismissed certain elements of a U.S. proposal aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine. The statement came after a five-hour meeting between President Vladimir Putin and top envoys from former President Trump.
Yury Ushakov, a key aide to Putin, described the discussions as productive and detailed, but emphasized that some suggestions developed in consultations with Ukraine were unacceptable to Russia. We found common ground on certain points, as the President conveyed, while other proposals were met with criticism, Ushakov said, and the President openly expressed our objections to some parts of the plan.
According to Ushakov, Trumps special peace envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner presented four documents during the session with Putin. The most significant disagreements arose over territorial matters. Nevertheless, Russia confirmed its willingness to continue talks with the United States.
Moscow seeks U.S. support in pressuring Ukraine to relinquish territory that Russia has not seized through military operations, as well as international recognition of areas taken during its 2014 and 2022 invasions. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has identified the key obstacles as territorial disputes, frozen Russian assets in the West, and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, also serving as Trumps national security adviser, explained in a Fox News interview that Washington is attempting to determine what territorial compromises Ukraine could accept while still securing future protections and economic recovery. Rubio noted that the U.S. has made some strides in bridging positions between Ukraine and Russia, though the sides remain far apart. He added that Russia is prepared to endure higher costs and a prolonged conflict to reach its objectives. Ultimately, decisions rest with Putin, not his advisors, Rubio stated.
