Safety concerns force closure of castle wall path

The Dana footpath, located beside Shrewsbury Castle and near the town's railway station, has been temporarily closed to the public due to safety concerns regarding the castle's structure, according to Shropshire Council.

"We have identified significant safety risks with some of the castle's battlements, so we have fenced off the Dana path to safeguard the public," said David Walker, the council's cabinet member for planning. He noted that while the police are keeping an eye on the area, which has a history of anti-social activity, limited access will be allowed for certain residents in case of emergencies.

The path is part of the Cove Group's property, connected to the prison estate, but the council emphasized that public safety is the top priority until repairs can be completed. Due to the castle's Grade I listed status, any repair work must be carefully planned and executed.

Authorities are collaborating with Historic England and specialized contractors to carry out further inspections and organize the necessary restoration work.
