Unidentified drones entered Ireland's airspace this week coinciding with the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to a source familiar with the situation. The source reassured that such events are closely monitored and controlled by defense authorities, noting that similar sightings have become increasingly common across Europe.
The Irish Department of Defense confirmed that authorities are investigating the incident thoroughly, with both military and police officials reviewing all details.
Reports indicate the drones were sizable and likely built to military standards. Irish officials have categorized the occurrence as a form of hybrid threat, according to local media sources citing national security services. Following the drone sightings, senior government figures were briefed on the situation.
This event follows a pattern of drone activity reported across Europe, targeting critical infrastructure such as airports and military facilities in countries including Germany, Denmark, and the Baltic states. The presence of unmarked drones has, in several cases, led to flight suspensions and sightings near sensitive military locations, such as a Belgian base storing U.S. nuclear weapons. Some NATO allies have suggested these incursions are part of escalating hybrid warfare tactics.
According to Irish media, four military-style drones penetrated a no-fly zone and approached the trajectory of Zelenskyy's aircraft as it neared Dublin Airport. The drones reached the expected location of the plane just as it passed over the area. Zelenskyy's flight landed slightly ahead of schedule, just before the drone activity was observed around 11 p.m. local time. Afterwards, the drones were reported circling an Irish Navy vessel that had been deployed in the Irish Sea for security during the presidential visit.
During the visit, President Zelenskyy held discussions with Irelands Prime Minister Michel Martin and addressed the Irish parliament. The Irish military declined to provide detailed comments but confirmed that a coordinated security operation with local police ensured a safe and successful visit.
