When to go outside in Florida to see the full moon? Best times and tips

Tonight, December 4, marks the peak of this month's full moon, also recognized as the final supermoon of 2025. While the moon may have looked full in the past couple of nights, its brightest and most illuminated phase occurs tonight.

This December supermoon, often called the "cold moon," will appear higher in the sky than any full moon until 2042, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Although three supermoons are expected in 2026, if you miss the one on January 3, you'll need to wait until November to see the next.

Peak Time for Viewing

The full moon will reach maximum brightness at 6:14 p.m. ET on Thursday, December 4.

Where and How to See It in Florida

Look toward the eastern horizon for the clearest view, ensuring there are no obstructions. Full moons rise at sunset and set at sunrise, with the December moon appearing fully illuminated through December 5.

Florida Cloud Conditions

Cloud cover at 7 p.m. on December 4 may block views across the Panhandle and northern Florida, while southern parts of the peninsula are expected to have clearer skies.

Origin of the Cold Moon Name

The term "cold moon" comes from the Mohawk tribe, reflecting the chilly weather typical for December. This supermoon concludes a series of three supermoons in 2025. Novembers supermoon was slightly closer to Earth than December's, but tonights view should still be impressive if skies are clear.

Best Spots for Dark Sky Viewing

To fully enjoy the supermoon, move away from city and street lights. Recommended dark-sky locations in Florida include:

  • Groveland, Lake County about 30 miles west of Orlando
  • Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park 25 miles north of Okeechobee
  • Big Cypress National Preserve Ochopee, in South Floridas Everglades

What Is a Supermoon?

A supermoon occurs when the full moon is at its closest approach to Earth, appearing larger and brighter than usual. Astronomers call this a perigean full moon. Supermoons appear three to four times per year and always occur consecutively.

Photography Tips

For capturing the best moon photos with your phone:

  • Include foreground objects to give context and composition.
  • Turn off the flash and focus on the moon itself.
  • Use a timer to avoid shaking the camera.
  • Photograph during twilight or dawn when the moons brightness is balanced with the sky.
  • If available, adjust ISO to low and aperture to wide.
  • Using a telescope with your phone can help achieve sharp, detailed shots.
