When to view Iowa's last full moon of 2025, December's cold moon

The final supermoon of 2025, known as the cold moon, is set to illuminate the night sky across Iowa and the world. Heres everything you need to know about catching a glimpse of this spectacular celestial event.

On Thursday, December 4, the cold moon will reach its peak visibility. According to NASA, the full moon will be at its highest point at 5:14 p.m. CT. Even after this peak, the moon will remain bright and nearly full for several nights, giving skywatchers multiple opportunities to observe it.

Observers in Iowa should have favorable viewing conditions. The National Weather Service forecasts mostly clear skies in Des Moines, with only 15% sky coverage around 6 p.m. However, extremely low temperatures may pose a challenge for those heading outdoors, with nighttime lows around 8F and wind chill values dropping to approximately -5F.

The next supermoon is predicted to appear on January 3, 2026, according to the Old Farmers Almanac.
