Approval set for plan to revamp 'deteriorating' area

The initiative to rejuvenate a visibly declining section of Hucknall, aimed at boosting visitor numbers in the town centre, is set to receive approval. Ashfield District Councils planning committee is expected to endorse plans on Wednesday to enhance Central Walk and Chapel Street.

The proposals feature refurbishing or replacing the arcade canopy, modernizing shop fronts, introducing new landscaping, and installing public art. A report for council members described the plan as a "major project" that will "improve both the appearance and quality" of the town centre.

The scheme, with an estimated cost of 600,000, will be financed through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. According to Ashfield Independents, the councils managing group, the "poor aesthetics and lighting" of Central Walkwhich connects Piggins Croft car park to the High Streetand the Chapel Street route have contributed to anti-social behaviour.

The planned improvements aim to tackle these issues directly and establish "a lively and secure entrance to the town centre." Council documents emphasize that the project intends to create a welcoming environment that encourages residents and visitors to spend time in Hucknall, providing a "distinctly local" atmosphere and a refreshed identity.

The report for councillors notes: "This project represents a major visual upgrade, making the area more appealing for customers, residents, and businesses, while significantly enhancing the vitality of the town centre."
