Construction of the new leisure centre is delayed once more

The development of a new 31 million leisure centre in the village of Cranleigh has been postponed for an additional year. The facility will feature a six-lane, 25-meter swimming pool, a teaching pool, a spacious gym, two versatile exercise and activity studios, and a cafe.

Initial approval for the project was granted in March, with Waverley Borough Council (WBC) originally planning to begin construction in summer 2025. Later updates had indicated a start in autumn of this year. However, the council now reports that construction will not commence until summer 2026, with the leisure centre expected to open in winter 2027.

The delay has been attributed to changes in market conditions encountered during the period required to finalize planning permission requirements. WBC explained that these factors necessitated a reassessment of the project and a revision of its timeline.

Local Conservative councillors have voiced concern over the postponement. Jane Austin described the news as "worrying," highlighting the importance of transparency given the 31 million of public funds already allocated. She added that further delays could increase costs and extend inconvenience for residents. Austin also emphasized that the Conservatives will continue to demand clarity and accountability from the council.

The council confirmed that contractor Willmott Dixon will be responsible for executing the project. Liz Townsend, WBCs portfolio holder for planning and development, stated that collaboration with the contractor is underway to finalize designs, costs, and schedules. She described the new leisure centre as a major addition for Cranleigh and nearby communities.
