Reopening date announced for Victorian pool

The historic Health Hydro on Milton Road, which has been closed for over two years, is scheduled to reopen on 19 January, according to Swindon Borough Council (SBC). Swimmers will soon be able to use the facility once again.

Restoration work is still underway in other sections of the Grade II*-listed building, including the Turkish Baths, which will remain closed for the time being.

SBC councillor Marina Strinkovsky emphasized the importance of carefully preserving the unique and historic nature of the Health Hydro. She stated that the reopening comes with major upgrades and a facility ready to welcome visitors safely.

Originally constructed in 1891 by the Great Western Railway Medical Fund, the Health Hydro was designed to provide affordable preventative and medical care to the local community. Recent restoration efforts have included new changing rooms, a redesigned entrance hall, a gym and activity space, as well as asbestos removal.

The council has obtained planning permission and listed building consent for the next stage of renovations, which will focus on the main pool hall. Planned improvements include enhanced ventilation, better accessibility, and increased environmental efficiency. However, funding for these works has not yet been secured.

Ms Strinkovsky expressed her excitement about the reopening, noting that swimmers and gym users will soon be able to enjoy the Hydro again. She also highlighted that work continues to ensure future phases of restoration are completed.
