Debenhams store to be transformed into apartments and retail spaces

Plans to transform the former Debenhams department store in Hull city centre into a mixed-use development have received official approval. The property has been vacant since May 2021, following the closure of more than 100 Debenhams stores across the UK, which resulted in the loss of around 12,000 jobs.

DBG Group has proposed converting the 180,000 sq ft (16,700 sq m) building, located between Prospect Street and Ferensway, into 178 apartments while retaining several retail units on the ground floor. The proposals aim to revitalize the building, which still reflects the former Debenhams branding.

The plans were approved by Hull City Council's planning committee during a meeting on Wednesday. Susan Chan, the planning agent for the project, described the redevelopment as an opportunity to "regenerate the entire building."

Two separate applications were passed unanimously: one covering the residential conversion and the other addressing structural changes, including the addition of an atrium and replacement of existing windows. Councillors did raise concerns about parking, but these did not prevent approval.

Construction on the new apartments and retail spaces is expected to begin early next year. DBG Group has prior experience in repurposing properties, including the conversion of a former TSB Bank on George Street into 47 apartments.
