Disney+ Originals Executive Advises Producers to Avoid Pitching Children's Shows as Streaming Platform Focuses on Showing Adult-Friendly Content

During a keynote in London, Disney Television Studios head Eric Schrier outlined a new content approach for Disney+, encouraging producers to prioritize adult-oriented programming, including dramas, comedies, and documentaries, rather than family-focused shows. We arent rigid, Schrier remarked, emphasizing that scripted content remains central to Disney+s strategy, alongside unscripted series like true crime and documentaries.

He noted that local Disney+ teams in Europe and Latin America are unlikely to take on childrens content, which remains mainly managed by Disneys U.S. headquarters.

Highlighting the type of projects he seeks, Schrier said the focus is on local for local content. Rather than simply replicating global franchises, the company aims to create regionally flavored shows that complement Disneys major brands, such as Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Hulu, and FX. French shows for French audiences, Spanish shows for Spanish audiences, U.K. shows for U.K. audiences, he explained, stressing the importance of local authenticity.

Schrier revealed that Disney+ produces roughly 100 shows annually across 20 markets in multiple languages. He also confirmed that the platform plans to increase international content investment, a priority highlighted by CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston in recent financial updates. Theres a strong need for local content to engage regional viewers, Schrier stated, noting growth potential in Europe and Asia.

Reflecting on the first five years of Disney+, Schrier admitted that the initial content strategy was spread too broadly. The current phase focuses on targeting markets where the service can grow most effectively.

A key goal, he emphasized, is changing the perception that Disney+ is exclusively for children. Our priority is to shift how audiences see Disney+ by adding edgier content, Schrier said. He added that family programming will continue under Disneys global brands, while Disney+ will expand adult-oriented content through Hulu originals worldwide.
