The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, has firmly refuted the claims made about the European Union in the latest United States national security strategy. On Friday, Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho denied allegations suggesting that the EU compromises political freedom, damages the continent through its migration policies, or restricts freedom of expression.
However, Pinho refrained from offering detailed commentary on the full content of the US strategy, stating, "We have not yet had the opportunity to thoroughly examine and evaluate the report, so we are not in a position to comment on it at this time."
The new strategy, released by the White House late Thursday, presents a grim assessment of Europe. It argues that "key challenges facing Europe include actions by the European Union and other transnational organizations that weaken political liberty and sovereignty, migration policies causing societal tension, limitations on free speech and political opposition, declining birth rates, and erosion of national identity and confidence."
Regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the document claims that "the Trump Administration disagrees with European leaders, who it sees as holding unrealistic expectations for the war, often supported by unstable minority governments that undermine democratic principles to suppress dissent." It also notes that, while the majority of Europeans desire peace, this sentiment is inadequately reflected in current political decisions due to governments compromising democratic processes.
Ursula von der Leyen, as President of the European Commission, is expected to address these issues, including ongoing peace negotiations in Ukraine, during discussions in the European Parliament.
