Map reveals states where recalled shredded cheese was distributed

Various shredded cheese products sold at major retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Aldi have been recalled due to the potential presence of metal fragments. The recall was initiated by Great Lakes Cheese Co., based in Ohio, on October 3 and remains active as of December 1, according to the latest Food and Drug Administration (FDA) update. The FDA has classified this as a "Class II" recall, indicating the products may cause temporary or reversible health issues if consumed.

The recall includes multiple shredded cheese blends distributed across 31 states, sold under several brand names including store brands like Good & Gather, Great Value, Publix, Sprouts, and Happy Farms.

Consumers are advised that eating the affected cheese could lead to injury from metal pieces. Great Lakes Cheese stated on December 3 that all recalled products have been removed from store shelves and replaced with safe alternatives. "Products currently available in stores are safe and not linked to the October recall," the company confirmed.

Households that may still have the recalled cheese in their refrigerators or freezers should either discard it or return it to the store for a refund.

The recall highlights ongoing concerns over food safety. Similar issues have occurred with ready-to-eat and deli meats, which can harbor bacteria like Listeria monocytogenes if stored or processed improperly. In 2024, millions of pounds of ready-to-eat foods were recalled due to listeria contamination, illustrating the risks associated with certain widely consumed products.
