Crayola-branded magnetic building cubes are being voluntarily recalled due to a potential hazard from loose magnets, which could be swallowed and cause serious injury or death. CreateOn, the importer of around 9,400 of these toys, announced the recall this week. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shared the notice on its website on December 4.
The recalled toys, known as Crayola PipCubes, contain magnets that may detach if the seams separate, creating a risk of ingestion for children. No injuries have been reported so far.
The CPSC warns that swallowed high-powered magnets can attract each other or other metal objects inside the digestive system, potentially causing perforations, twisting, intestinal blockages, infections, or even death.
The affected PipCubes were manufactured in China and sold in sets of 24 or 27 cubes. They belong to the "Bold Colors" and "Glitter Pip-Cubes" collections. The Bold Colors cubes come in red, green, blue, and yellow, while the Glitter Pip-Cubes are purple, pink, blue, and green with glitter. Each cube has "Crayola" marked on the left side.
Consumers can find a full list of recalled models, including UPC numbers, on the CPSC and CreateOn websites.
The recalled sets were sold between May and July for $20 to $35 through Amazon, Michaels stores across the U.S., and Michaels online store.
The CPSC advises anyone with the recalled PipCubes to stop using them immediately and keep them away from children. CreateOn will provide a replacement set and a pre-paid mailing label for returning affected cubes.
A Crayola spokesperson confirmed that the recalled PipCubes are licensed products made by CreateOn. Consumers are urged to follow the recall instructions provided by CreateOn and the CPSC. CreateOn stated that they are fully cooperating with the CPSC, have notified customers, updated their website, and are working with retailers to remove the product from shelves.
