More than 1,000 Amazon workers criticize company's controversial AI usage in a letter: 'Moving towards a more militarized surveillance state'

This year, technology firms have invested heavily in artificial intelligence amid a surge in AI development and data center expansion. However, a group of Amazon employees has raised alarms over the companys AI initiatives, highlighting global crises such as climate change, political unrest, and the rise of a "more militarized surveillance state with fewer protections for ordinary people."

According to a letter obtained by Fortune, more than 1,000 Amazon employees from diverse rolesincluding cashiers and IT supportexpressed concern that the company is pushing for rapid AI adoption while compromising environmental commitments. The employees claim that Amazon is requiring teams to adopt unnecessary AI tools and simultaneously reducing staff, all while continuing to funnel substantial resources into AI development.

Amazon responded by rejecting the allegations that it has neglected sustainability, pointing to its ongoing investments in renewable energy, including over 600 renewable energy projects and agreements in advanced nuclear energy. The company emphasized that these efforts reflect its continued focus on environmental responsibility.

The employees letter also raised alarms about a potential reintroduction of an AI-based police footage request tool for Ring doorbells, warning that it could grant excessive authority to government agencies and private companies without sufficient safeguards. Workers further noted that expanding AI rapidly demands more energy and infrastructure, coinciding with job cuts and heightened expectations for remaining staff.

Industry analysts have remarked that Big Techs current AI investments represent a unique and unprecedented shift. A Goldman Sachs expert highlighted that the scale of today's AI spending marks a significant transition unlike anything seen in previous technology booms.

In response to these issues, the Amazon employees are urging the company to publish a clear plan for powering data centers with renewable energy and to involve workers in decision-making regarding AI usage. They also request a formal commitment ensuring that AI applications will not be used for violence, mass surveillance, or deportations.

The letter underscores the employees goal of steering AI deployment toward tools that simplify life and support sustainability, rather than increasing surveillance, job insecurity, or environmental harm.
