Potential Increase in Town's Council Tax with Devolution of Services

Residents of Ludlow may see a rise in their town council tax if the local authority assumes responsibility for certain services currently managed by Shropshire Council. The county council has forecasted an overspend of 47 million by the end of this financial year and has requested urgent financial assistance from the government.

Ludlow Town Council confirmed it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Shropshire Council, outlining collaborative efforts and the possibility of transferring some services to the town level where suitable.

The town council noted that taking on additional duties to support Shropshire Council would likely incur extra costs, which could be reflected in council tax. At this stage, no estimates for a potential tax increase are available.

"We are entering a challenging period as we prepare the 2026/2027 budget," the council stated. "We recognize the impact this could have on council tax, but we must also consider the broader effects of service changes at the county level and act in the best interests of our community."

The council emphasized that its goal is to deliver high-quality services efficiently for local residents.

To guide its approach amid Shropshire Council's financial challenges, Ludlow Town Council has initiated a community engagement plan. "It is vital that residents share their priorities for the town council in the coming years," it added.

"We will expand our communication through surveys and community meetings to ensure everyone has the opportunity to contribute their views."
