Proposal to raise maximum home care costs by 21%

Rotherham residents could face a 21% increase in the highest weekly charge for home care services, according to proposals from the local council. The suggested change would raise the current cap from 689 to 837 per week starting in April 2026.

The adjustment would apply to non-residential care, including home visits, day programs, and supported living assistance. Currently, roughly 25 individuals reach the maximum weekly fee, but the council expects that number to drop to six after the increase, aligning charges more closely with actual service costs.

Council documents indicate that the policy could save up to 85,000 annually. Low-income residents will continue to undergo financial assessments to ensure fees remain affordable based on their circumstances.

Additionally, the council is proposing a one-time 350 administration charge for self-funders who request the council to organize their care. Approximately 200 people currently use this arrangement, but officials noted that covering these administrative costs is no longer financially sustainable.

Previous suggestions for an annual administration fee were withdrawn following public opposition. The council emphasized that individuals with limited means will not see any negative impact, as all charges are determined through a means-tested process.

Council members are scheduled to vote on the proposals during a meeting on 15 December.
