Record High Layoffs as Trump Boasts About Economy

The United States is experiencing its highest number of layoffs since the Covid-19 crisis, with 1.1 million job cuts reported so far this year, despite President Donald Trump repeatedly claiming that the countrys economy is the strongest in the world.

According to consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, November alone saw 71,321 layoffs. This pushes the annual total to 1.17 million, marking a 54% increase compared to last year and the most significant layoffs since 2020.

At the same time, hiring has slowed considerably, with employers reporting a 35% drop in new hires from the previous year.

Amid these economic difficulties, recent polling by Politico indicates that nearly half of Americans believe the cost of living has reached unprecedented levels, with many placing the blame squarely on Trump. His campaign had emphasized making life more affordable and supporting working-class Americans affected by globalization. However, as the economy struggles, he has dismissed concerns about affordability as a Democrat scam.

If the current trends persistrising layoffs, stagnant wages, and increased living costsit could pose significant challenges for the Republican Party in the 2026 midterm elections.
