Conway Discusses His Upcoming Album 'You Can't Kill God With Bullets': 'I'm Holding Back Tears, This Is Incredible'

My first encounter with Griselda came around 2015 when I stumbled upon Conways mixtape Reject 2 on SoundCloud. His name occasionally appeared on social media, so I decided to explore further. The album cover immediately caught my attention: a black-and-white image showing bullet holes on his right side, a reminder of the Bells palsy he still manages daily.

It took me a while just to step out of my room, Conway shared during a visit to the New York Billboard office. I didnt want anyone to see me. Accepting my appearance has been a struggle, one Im still navigating.

Conways Reject 2 tape, followed by Griseldas Dont Get Scared Now in 2016, helped establish the Buffalo, NY collective on the scene. They built upon the groundwork laid by East Coast underground artists like Roc Marciano and Ka, shaping a modern twist on the classic boom-bap sound.

Now, nearly a decade later, Conway is releasing his fifth solo album while running his own label. You Cant Kill God With Bullets was initially set for release earlier this year but is now scheduled for December 12. Two singles have already dropped, the latest being Diamonds, featuring Roc Marciano. Production includes heavyweights like Justice League, Araab Muzik, The Alchemist, Timbaland, Apollo Brown, Conductor Williams, and Daringer.

Touring and Global Appreciation

Reflecting on his European tour this summer, Conway said, The energy there is unlike anything. Fans are deeply connected to the culture, and its truly love. Its incredible to see hip-hop thriving in places you wouldnt expect, with murals and graffiti celebrating the art.

He noted the European audiences dedication stems from their genuine connection to hip-hops roots. For many, hip-hop is everything. They relate to the struggles and stories behind it, unlike the current era in the U.S., which often prioritizes fame and hype over authenticity.

Label and Artistic Growth

Conways venture with Drumwork, launched in 2020, has been a learning experience. There have been wins and losses, but its all part of the journey, he said. He also emphasized his continued versatility: experimenting with flows, beats, and challenging himself beyond his comfort zone, a trait that has been part of his craft since the beginning.

Discussing influences, Conway cited Eminem, Kool G Rap, Nas, Jay-Z, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Kurupt, noting how they shaped his approach to versatility in rap. He sees Reject 2 as a pivotal moment in his career, the project that truly launched him and helped him provide for his family.

Recording Process and Collaborations

Recording for the new album spanned multiple locations, including Denver, Ravenna, Rome, and Tbilisi, Georgia. Conway shared that he connected with producers like Timbaland and Swizz Beatz through personal encounters and collaborations, contributing to the albums diverse sound.

I always try to pick beats people wouldnt expect me to touch, Conway explained. Its about taking risks and pushing my artistry forward.

Emotional Depth and Inspiration

Conway described the album as potentially his best yet. Listening to it now, I have to hold back tears. Everything came togetherthe writing, the beats. Its a testament to overcoming challenges and turning pain into creativity.

The album includes interludes with speeches from Jamil Al-Amin and Kwame Ture, reflecting Conways revolutionary mindset during the creation process. Those clips resonated with me. They were like a call to action, motivating me to channel my energy into the studio and make something meaningful.

Mental Health and Personal Challenges

Conway opened up about the lasting effects of being shot in 2012. It affected my confidence and left me dealing with anxiety, even amidst success. But music has always been my outletits where I feel free to express myself.

Despite discomfort with fame, Conway focuses on leaving a legacy for future generations. I do this not for myself, but for those who come after me. Music is the inheritance I can leave behind.

Upcoming Plans

Conway is now back in the U.S., preparing for his tour and celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Reject 2 with special shows in New York City and Buffalo. The upcoming project Reject 3 will primarily feature Daringer and Conductor on production, continuing the legacy of Griseldas signature sound.

You Cant Kill God With Bullets is Conway the Machines highly anticipated new album, featuring collaborations with Roc Marciano, Corey Kendricks, Lady London, and more, set to make a major impact in the music world.
